New Promise For Chimps as a Horryfying History is Finally Exposed
Thanks to the tireless effort of the organization In Defense of Animals, a lawsuit against the NIH has finally been won, releasing tens of thousands of pages of medical records on chimpanzees used in scientific and medical experimentation. The papers reveal "the profound mental and physical anguish that chimpanzees endure in labs". From IDA:
A three-part "Special Report" on chimpanzee experimentation by McClatchy Newspapers investigative reporter Chris Adams, which has been featured in papers nationwide including the Sacramento Bee, San Jose Mercury News, Kansas City Star, Miami Herald, Arizona Republic, and Charlotte Observer; high-profile blogs such as the Huffington Post and DailyKos; and linked to by international media such as the Toronto Star and India Times...Such suffering, together with the scientific move away from using chimpanzees, makes this series a game-changer in the fight to end chimpanzee experimentation once and for all.The McClatchy expose is only the tip of the iceberg. IDA views these medical records, which the NIH must continue to provide to IDA for years, as the next phase in our longstanding fight to end chimpanzee experimentation.
Click here to send a fax to your federal representatives, asking them to support the Great Ape Protection and Cost Savings Act of 2011, which was introduced on April 13 and already has 42 co-sponsors in the House (H.R. 1513) and 3 in the Senate (S. 810). Mention the McClatchy series, which lays bare the scientific and moral bankruptcy of chimpanzee experimentation as well as the malfeasance of the NIH.
Share the McClatchy series with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, email, and other social media. Write comments on the McClatchy site and the sites of other media outlets that have run this groundbreaking series, and letters to the editors of the newspapers that ran either part or all of the series. And please thank McClatchy for its prodigious efforts and urge the newspaper chain to continue covering this extremely important topic. You can be sure that the pro-experimentation lobby and its vested-interest supporters will be doing everything possible to blunt the impact of this shocking expose.
